As the Assistant Chief Bridge Engineer for COWI, Mr. Topbas worked on one existing and two new steel highway bridges, each with eight 300 ft long continuous spans. Golden Horn Bridge in Istanbul, was a design-build project built with 8,000 tons of structural steel by the I.H.I. Corporation of Japan and ENKA, Turkey. Responsibilities included the supervision and inspection of the erection, land assembly, and painting of steel super-box girders and field welded and bolted connections; fatigue fracture analysis of the orthographic deck and cross members; preparation of proposals for strengthening the existing bridge against corrosion and fatigue; supervision of deck crack repair, sandblasting, waterproofing, the mastic-asphalt pavement of the deck, and installation of the drainage system.
