Together SanalArc we designed this building across from the famed Galata Tower in Istanbul. This was a reconstruction of the original 10 story building made with masonry load-bearing walls and terracotta-steel beam vaulted flooring. Following the historic geometry, we reconstructed the vaulted flooring with architecturally exposed structural concrete. The concrete vaults are going to be exposed as ceiling decoration as well as structural purpose. The niches between the arches will be used for the embedded ceiling lighting as well. We designed a double earthquake system with shear walls and column-beam rigid frames. ATTEC also designed the steel formwork for the vaulted ceilings, so this could be an efficient, strong, and easily dismantlable system, as well as helping the aesthetics and revival of historic character.
