We provided timber system and detail engineering as well as reinforced concrete foundation design services for the architect Beysun Mert and the owner Murat Karamanci for this Ottoman-era mansion along Bosphorus at Anadolu Hisari. Steel-piled pier structure, and working under the sea level were some explicit challenges of the projects where we assisted with method-devising and special solutions. The timber structure was a two-story building with 4.5m ceiling heights, narrow and long in plan with 10m on the narrow side. The typical load-bearing wall system was usually not preferred in the structure, so we designed the floors to span a challenging 10m, and for the earthquake resistance we devised special CLT solid shear walls and rigid post-beam frames. Special moment-resisting and high-tensile transferring joints were designed to take the earthquake forces.
